Research on the Role of Support Institutions in Startup Location Choice
— A Study of Current and Graduated Tenant Companies of Fukuoka Growth Next —
About the KERC Regional Research Grant Program
The Kyushu Economic Research Center (KERC), a public interest incorporated foundation, awards research grants to encourage practical studies that contribute to the economic and social development of the Kyushu region (Kyushu, Okinawa and Yamaguchi). Iwabuchi was selected for the program's 2024 grant and has been carrying out the research since.
Purpose of the Research
The purpose of this research is to understand the current factors that contribute to startup companies' choice of location within Fukuoka City.
Momentum for supporting startups has been building nationwide in recent years, but Fukuoka City has led the way since its 2012 "Startup City Declaration," focusing intensively on startup support ahead of the rest of the country. Roughly a decade on from that declaration, and amid considerable change, this research examines why Fukuoka's startups have chosen to base themselves in the city and what kind of urban environment and support systems they have sought — with the aim of informing future city planning.
Research Method
In addition to analyzing the location characteristics of startup companies, we conducted interviews with startups and with VC and CVC stakeholders, combining quantitative and qualitative analysis.
This approach — grounding analysis in location and data — underlies the research and analysis work URBANIX carries out across the country.
